Senior Economist for Social Protection and Labor, World Bank

Ignacio Apella is a Senior Economist for Social Protection and Jobs for Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Bank, and the coordinator of the pension area for the region. He holds a degree in economics and a master's degree in economics from the University of Buenos Aires. His areas of interest include social security economics, pension systems, aging economics, and labor economics.

Before joining the World Bank, he was a researcher at the Center for the Study of State and Society (CEDES) for ten years and served as the deputy director of the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Economic of the University of Buenos Aires. He is the author of numerous articles published in various journals such as the Journal of Pension Economics and Finance, International Social Security Review, International Labour Review, Revista de la CEPAL, Economica, among others. His most recent books study the pension system of Argentina with public policy options; the potential economic impact of demographic transition in Latin America and the Caribbean; and the expansion of non-contributory pension schemes in Latin America and the Caribbean.

He is a professor at the University of Buenos Aires.
